With its flavour and lightness, the fig is a beloved summer fruit that is particularly rich in natural sugars, fibre, potassium, calcium, iron and other minerals. It is also a good source of antioxidant vitamins such as A and K that support health. Thanks to the rich minerals and vitamins it contains, consuming figs both fresh in season and dried out of season provides numerous benefits. Acıbadem Taksim Hospital Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Dilan Eker states that a healthy adult should consume 2-3 servings of fruit per day, noting "One large fig is approximately 60 calories. Therefore, 2-3 figs can be consumed daily. However, due to its high natural fruit sugar and glucose content, especially diabetic patients should not exceed one fig per day" she says. Acıbadem Taksim Hospital Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Dilan Eker shared 7 important benefits of figs and offered recommendations.

Protects the Heart with Its Potassium Content

Fig is a good source of potassium mineral, which helps lower blood pressure. The increased salt (sodium) consumption associated with Western-style diets and the reduced consumption of vegetables and fruits as potassium sources create the conditions for cardiovascular diseases, particularly hypertension. Scientific studies show that a DASH-type diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in salt and saturated fats significantly lowers blood pressure.

Provides Satiety

Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Dilan Eker notes that fig, as a natural sugar source, is also an excellent source of fibre, in other words dietary fibre, stating "Consuming figs containing natural sugar and fibre instead of a dessert containing added sugar and saturated fat extends the period of satiety, helping to reduce daily energy intake. With this effect, it contributes to the maintenance of weight loss diets. For example, consuming one fig together with a glass of milk or 10-15 raw nuts helps balance blood sugar and provides satiety benefits. You can consume the fig either this way as a snack, or immediately after a meal containing low carbohydrates. However, excessive consumption should be avoided due to the fruit sugars fructose and glucose it contains" she says.

Aids in Fighting Cancer

Fig is a rich source of polyphenols. Polyphenols are antioxidants that protect the human body against oxidative stress.

Supports Bone Health

Fig is a good source of calcium, the most basic mineral supporting bone health. It also helps reduce the amount of uric acid and other harmful toxins in the body while preventing calcium loss.

Prevents Constipation

The soluble and insoluble fibre found in figs also supports intestinal functions. Fig contains prebiotics that feed beneficial bacteria in the intestines and support digestive health.

Contributes to Skin Renewal

In general, a dietary habit rich in vitamins and minerals with high antioxidant capacity contributes to skin renewal and slowing down ageing.

Balances Blood Sugar

The fibre and potassium found in figs help balance blood sugar. A recent study showed that fig leaf extract reduces the amount of insulin required by insulin-dependent diabetic patients.
