The prize was awarded to Mary Brunkow from the Institute for Systems Biology, Fred Ramsdell from Sonoma Biotherapeutics, and Shimon Sakaguchi from Osaka University.
The researchers' work shed light on the functioning of regulatory T cells, which play a critical role in protecting the immune system from autoimmune diseases, and pioneered the development of new therapeutic approaches.
Nobel Committee Chair Olle Kämpe said in a press statement, "Their discoveries have been very important for our understanding of how the immune system works and why we don't all develop serious autoimmune diseases."
