"The Future of Glass" Discussed at Glass Symposium Organized by the Şişecam Group

Şişecam, one of Turkey's most established institutions, hosted leading names from the global glass industry at this year's 33rd Glass Symposium. The highly attended Şişecam Glass Symposium, which brought together 525 participants, featured discussions on the future of the glass sector and new technologies. Şişecam, a global player across all core glass sectors and in soda and chromium compounds, held this year's 33rd Şişecam Glass Symposium at the İş Bankası Tuzla Technology and Operations Center. The highly attended Şişecam Glass Symposium, with 525 participants, brought together leading glass industry representatives and scientists from around the world to discuss the future of the glass sector and new technologies. At the symposium's opening, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kırman, Vice Chairman and General Manager of Şişecam Board of Directors, highlighted the importance of the organization bringing together the glass world and academics in Istanbul, stating: "Beginning in 1985, the Şişecam Glass Symposiums, where we share internally generated knowledge, strengthened skills and competencies, have in recent years transformed into the most important platform in our country for bringing together scientists, industrialists and executives in the glass sector. The increasing interest from national and international universities, research institutions and companies in this year's 33rd Şişecam Glass Symposium, and the participant numbers that honor us, are strong indicators that the steps taken so far have been in the right direction," he said.

Pointing out that Şişecam and other global sector players are taking important steps to advance glass further, Kırman said: "Scientific and technological developments continuously redefine glass and its applications. While there is no sector that glass has not entered, the functions and applications currently assigned to glass and its products are increasing at a scale and pace that will challenge all of our imaginations. Scientists and industrialists working to continuously expand the boundaries of the glass sector note that this century will be the 'glass age'," he stated. Prof. Dr. Şener Oktik, Head of Research and Technological Development at Şişecam, noted in his remarks that they were among the first institutions to conduct institutional R&D activities in Turkey, stating: "Today we conduct our research and technological development activities in 28 separate specialty laboratories within the Şişecam Science Technology and Design Center, which was established in Gebze Çayırova in 2014 and has 9,400 square meters of enclosed space." Expressing that the growing interest from Şişecam researchers and employees, as well as from national and international universities, research institutions and companies, in the single and most powerful platform in the field of glass science and technology gives encouragement for future steps, Oktik continued: "A total of 525 glass sector professionals registered for the 33rd Şişecam Glass Symposium. Starting with an opening special session and proceeding through 6 parallel sessions, the symposium featured knowledge sharing from a total of 14 invited speakers from Turkey and abroad. Within the symposium framework, a total of 80 papers were presented, consisting of 78 oral presentations and 2 posters."
