Summary

Paint has numerous applications across many sectors, primarily for coating and decorative purposes. Technological advancement has influenced the paint market. Along with increasing demand, environmentally friendly, odorless, dust- and water-resistant paints have begun to be produced. Bamboo, used to prevent the intense and unpleasant odor of paint, is a durable, environmentally friendly and composite biomaterial. Bamboo traps liquid through its fibers and retains it in its structure for extended periods. In this study, experimental work was conducted on trapping violet fragrance in acrylic organic coatings by exploiting bamboo's properties, yielding positive results.

1. Introduction

Bamboo is a biological composite, renewable, efficient and environmentally friendly organic material. Bamboo is hygroscopic and absorbs and desorbs moisture to balance with the moisture content of the environment [1-4]. Bamboo is an abundant and sustainable resource in tropical and subtropical regions. Due to faster growth, shorter rotation compared to other species and higher mechanical strength, bamboo has attracted considerable interest over the past thirty years. Bamboo is the fastest-growing and most versatile plant in the world. There are more than 1,500 documented uses for bamboo. Sectors such as housing, handicrafts, paper, panels, coatings, etc. have been explored by modern science and technology [5, 6]. At the same time, since bamboo is a natural source of antioxidants and contains elements such as vitamins C and E, copper, iron and zinc, its use in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics sectors is suitable [7]. Fragrances are used in every area of our daily lives (perfumes, deodorants, aftershave products, shampoos with cream and hair conditioners, etc.). Perfumes are pleasant or sweet-smelling compounds produced by organic chemists [8]. In this study, to eliminate the intense odor of paint, tests were conducted by adding bamboo and violet fragrance to acrylic organic coatings for long-lasting effects, and positive results were obtained.

2. Experimental Work

Dried bamboo (Figure 2.1) was added to water-based acrylic organic coating samples prepared in a predetermined optimal amount. Violet extract was added to the paints in the range of 0-8% (w/w) to prepare 8 separate samples. These samples were mixed using a mechanical stirrer to ensure proper homogenization.

The prepared samples were thinned with a predetermined amount of water and applied to 8 separate plates (Figure 2.2) and autoclaved aerated concrete (Figure 2.3). After the plates and aerated concrete were left for a specified period, drying, hydrophobicity and odor analyses were performed.

3. Results and Discussion 3.1 Drying Test

The test applied to the plates showed no paint stains remaining on the finger. This indicates that complete drying occurred (Figure 3.1).

3.2 Hydrophobicity Test

Water was dripped onto the plates, and it was observed that the water flowed without adhering and the surface was hydrophobic (Figure 3.2).

3.3 Odor Test on Concrete

Violet extract was added to 8 prepared samples at specific ratios. These samples were applied to aerated concrete. The aerated concrete was left for one week to allow bamboo to thoroughly absorb the odor. One week later, a sensory test was conducted and it was concluded that bamboo had absorbed and retained the odor. Aerated concrete with paint applied was kept in the laboratory environment for 12 months in the same manner to determine how long the odor would persist, and sensory tests conducted in the same way showed that the odor remained effective (Figure 3.3).

4. Conclusion

In conclusion, through the properties of bamboo, bamboo fibers added to acrylic organic coatings trapped the violet fragrance within the paint. A test conducted at the 12-month mark confirmed that the odor effect in the paint persisted. Thus, it was shown that through bamboo, long-lasting pleasant fragrances can be obtained in acrylic organic coatings for industrial applications. Assoc.
