Surface Academy Activities Held in Bursa

Surface Treatment Assoc. of Turkey- TÜYİDER Surface Academy- Borcelik Technical Academy - BTA Highlight Importance of Surface Treatments in Corrosion Protection Steel has been the most important structural metal for centuries and corrodes in open atmospheric conditions. Therefore, corrosion constitutes a very important and critical agenda for all metal manufacturers. With the increase in steel production and usage rate, anti-corrosion activities and the need for surface treatment are also inevitable. In this respect, cathodic protection methods such as zinc-based coatings (galvanized, electrolytic zinc alloy and lamellar zinc coatings and paints) are still widely used in the industry as a valid corrosion protection method. In this critical process, in order to bring the techno-economic effects of corrosion to the agenda and to find solutions to the sector's needs in this regard, a professionals' meeting was organized in cooperation with Borçelik Technical Academy (BTA) and Turkey Surface Treatments Association (TÜYİDER) Surface Academy. Under the scope of evaluation seminars on the role of surface treatments in corrosion and corrosion protection, managers of businesses operating in Bursa and its surroundings gathered at Kalder Bursa branch on 15 June. The opening speeches were made by Baran Burat, Member of the Executive Board of Borçelik, followed by İbrahim Doğangün, Chairman of the Board of Tuyider. The professionals' meeting was organized in 5 sessions under the moderation of Surface Academy Scientific Board Member Assoc.Prof.Dr. Ekrem Altuncu. The subject of corrosion was discussed by Prof.Dr. Ali Fuat Çakır and Prof.Dr. Mustafa Ürgen from ITU, who shared their long years of experience and real examples with the participants. Afterwards, Borcelik R&D Center Director Celal Sayalıoğlu presented corrosion research, test and control applications within Borçelik. In the afternoon sessions, İzzet Aydın, General Manager Turkey of Hillebrand Chemicals, emphasized the importance of electroplating zinc coating types and coating selection. In the final session, Metaltek Laboratories Director Tuncay Katırcı discussed corrosion tests and standards in detail. Borçelik has an annual steel production capacity of 1.5 million tons. It offers engineering solutions to the steel needs of all sectors, especially the automotive industry and white goods sectors. It aims to develop coatings and surface technologies suited to the needs of the global market, with training and research activities within the scope of cooperation with the Borçelik R&D Center, BTA and Tüyider Surface Academy.
