Evolution of Protein Consumption
Protein holds the "highest status" among the three macronutrients most used by our body. The amino acids that make up protein in foods are the fundamental building blocks that enable the formation of everything in our body, from muscles to bones to cartilage. Since protein is not stored in our body like other macronutrients, we must ensure we consume adequate amounts of protein each day so that our body systems continue to function properly. We can obtain protein, which means "first in importance," from either animal or plant-based foods.
There are 9 essential amino acids that our body cannot produce and must obtain from the foods we eat. If a protein source contains these 9 amino acids, it deserves the title of complete protein source. If it lacks even one type of essential amino acid, it is not considered a complete protein source.
Consequently, animal and plant proteins differ according to their essential amino acid content. All animal proteins are complete protein sources. When it comes to protein responsible for cell formation in the body, supporting growth, and renewing tissues, animal protein, which is considered a quality protein source, is always very important.
However, despite all its benefits, animal protein consumption has begun to become unsustainable. Livestock production causes more than half of global greenhouse gas emissions. As the world population grows rapidly, sustainable livestock farming to feed this population is not possible.
Additionally, with growing health trends, consumers have begun to prefer plant-based proteins more. Plant-based proteins have become a powerful alternative to animal protein thanks to their protein values as well as their fiber and whole grain content.
As consumers make more room for plant-based protein in their diets, "analog" meat products have also begun to quickly claim their place on shelves.
When we look at what our protein source will be in the future, we will see a wide variety of protein sources in our diets. To feed the growing world population, we will turn to new protein sources that are richer in protein than meat sources, consume fewer resources, and are more environmentally friendly; we will begin consuming various insects, marine algae, and laboratory-grown meats as new protein sources. Protein is indisputably the most important macronutrient and its popularity is growing every day. We are seeing protein-containing products mushroom in many categories. However, we need to address the sustainability of this trend. According to the United Nations, in the near future there may not be sufficient land and resources to feed the world population, so we must find sustainable alternative protein sources for both ourselves and our planet. Today, IFF is committed to doing better at every opportunity for both our world and humanity. In its corporate objectives, it emphasizes the responsibility of caring for world resources. As part of this commitment, it is making technological investments in this area through programs such as IFF Re-Imagine® Protein, which focuses on alternative protein products without compromising on taste.
