Agilent Launches High-Capacity Slide Scanner

Agilent strengthens its digital pathology capabilities with the launch of the Agilent S540MD scanner.

Agilent Technologies Inc. announced that the Agilent S540MD Slide Scanner System, a digital scanner featuring comprehensive whole slide imaging (WSI) capabilities, is now available for sale in key European markets. This launch reflects Agilent's ongoing investment in digital pathology while expanding its portfolio to meet growing demand for high-throughput solutions in clinical laboratories.

Pathology laboratories worldwide are under pressure to increase diagnostic accuracy and operational efficiency while managing rising sample volumes and case complexity. Consequently, laboratories require robust and high-speed scanning solutions that can seamlessly integrate into existing workflows. Operating solely on traditional glass slide workflows can slow turnaround times and overall output. Digitalization of workflows and artificial intelligence-assisted tools have proven to be key drivers of efficiency and scalability.

Designed for speed and scalability, the Agilent S540MD offers capacity for up to 540 slides, continuous loading, and standard rack compatibility. Featuring automated scanning modes and artificial intelligence-assisted tissue detection capabilities, the scanner enables high-volume pathology laboratories to efficiently digitize glass slides and implement digital and artificial intelligence-based workflows. The new scanner is the Agilent-branded version of the Hamamatsu NanoZoomer S540MD Slide Scanner System.

With the market introduction of the Agilent S540MD scanner, Agilent strengthens its expertise in digital pathology, enriching its offering spanning from staining to artificial intelligence-assisted decision support, and providing laboratories with greater flexibility in selecting solutions tailored to their specific requirements.

The Agilent S540MD scanner will initially be made available as an IVD in Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, Austria, Luxembourg, and Italy (IVDR), the United Kingdom (MDR 2002), and Switzerland (IvDO); expansion to additional European countries is planned, with new milestones scheduled for 2026.
