TİM Becomes a Signatory of the UN Global Compact

TİM, leading exporters with sustainability vision, signs UN Global Compact. The Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM), a pioneer among exporters with its sustainability vision, has become a signatory to the United Nations (UN) Global Compact. By taking its work in this field to a global level, TİM aims to lead the industrial transformation needed to combat climate change in cooperation with the public sector and strengthen international business partnerships. By signing the United Nations (UN) Global Compact, the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative with over 14,000 companies and more than 3,000 non-company members across more than 160 countries, TİM committed to abiding by the Ten Principles of UN Global Compact in the areas of human rights, labour standards, environment and anti-corruption, and to publishing its work in sustainability in a Statement of Accountability Report. Within the scope of the "TİM Climate Change Roadmap" and "TİM Sustainability Action Plan," TİM will pave the way for sustainable production and exports by carrying out work to identify the needs of sectors and exporting companies. TİM is undertaking numerous initiatives to raise awareness on climate change, the European Green Deal and sustainability, which are among the most important agenda items for Turkish exporters, through the work it has conducted on climate change, the European Green Deal and sustainability. The TİM Climate Change Committee was established in June 2020 to guide activities to be carried out on climate change. In October-November 2020, three separate "European Green Deal Awareness Meetings" were held for energy-intensive, resource-intensive and agricultural sectors. In October-December 2020, in cooperation with Boğaziçi University's Climate Change and Policies Implementation and Research Center, "Climate Change and Generalized EU Green Deal Training" was conducted to increase the competency of personnel working within Exporter Unions on climate change. The first of TİM Climate Talks was held with the Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey on 14 July. To guide exporting companies on the European Green Deal, climate change and sustainability in areas where they need support, the ALO TİM Green Line was launched with approximately 60 personnel working within TİM and Exporter Unions. The evaluation phase by the European Commission of the IPA III 2021-2022 Sustainable Industry Transformation Key Sectors Support Project is ongoing. TİM was eligible to become a member of the EIT Climate-KIC Network under TÜBİTAK Network Membership Support. TİM Sustainability Action Plan was announced on 21 June 2021 with the slogan "Produce for the world without consuming the world": The TİM Sustainability in Industry Scientific Committee was established as the first target, and the Committee's first meeting was held on 9 September 2021. Under the Zero Waste in Exports Project as the second target, following the work of the TİM Women's Council, a Zero Waste Management System was established in the Foreign Trade Complex, and the system implemented by TİM was awarded the Zero Waste Certificate. With Digital Mentoring and Training Programs as the third target; the creation of a sustainability ecosystem is aimed at, and within this scope, exporters are to benefit from analysis, reports and training on carbon border adjustment, circular economy and green finance with a focus on the European Green Deal and climate change, while strengthening academic-industry cooperation and knowledge flow. With Corporate Carbon Footprint Studies as the fourth target, companies are encouraged to measure their corporate carbon footprint using scientific methods. With Circularity in Industry and Advanced Recovery as the fifth target, work on awareness for material recovery and advanced recycling continues at a rapid pace. With "Advanced Treatment Technologies" as the sixth target, alignment work will be carried out with the Ministry of Industry and Technology's Priority Investments Legislation. Under "Sustainable Supply Chain Management" as the seventh target, awareness work to promote the Integrated Environmental Information System implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanism and Climate Change will begin with a training program. With "Standardization Practices" as the eighth target, exporting sectors will be facilitated to work in accordance with current international standards in TİM Sector Councils and access to financing will be improved. With "Standardization Practices" as the ninth target, certification work of relevant ministries, particularly the Turkish Standards Institution, will be integrated into the sectors to track regulations. Within the scope of "Renewable Energy Sources" as the tenth target, applications such as YEK-G will be followed, and leadership will be provided to work on alternative energy sources to be used instead of carbon-intensive sources. Under "Sustainable Economic Growth and Employment" as the eleventh target, the creation of authorized corporate and supply chain sustainability units in enterprises will be encouraged. Within the scope of "Digital Product Passport and Traceability" as the twelfth and final target, leadership will be provided in creating incentive areas to promote sectoral digital product passport applications through IoT and blockchain technology. While an intensive work process is underway for the targets, TİM and Exporter Unions personnel completed TSE EN ISO 14064 - 1:2029 Greenhouse Gas Calculation Training in December. The first TİM Regional Sustainable Exports Drive Training Program, to be launched under the Ecological Exports Academy umbrella, will be held for the Marmara region in January 2022.
