Avoid These Mistakes When Using Air Conditioning in Summer

With the increased use of air conditioners in the summer months, energy consumption in households and workplaces is also rising. However, using air conditioning systems correctly not only improves energy efficiency but also helps create a healthier and more comfortable indoor environment.

Energy consumption in homes and offices rises with increased air-conditioning use during summer months. However, proper operation of air-conditioning systems increases energy efficiency while contributing to a healthier and more comfortable workplace.

Üçay Mühendislik Academy and Operations Coordinator Yaşar Karakaya stated that correct temperature settings, humidity control, air circulation and regular maintenance are critical during summer air-conditioning use, noting that the criteria established by ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) provides an important reference on this matter.

Noting that air conditioners have become an indispensable part of daily life as temperatures rise in summer, Karakaya said that indoor comfort does not depend solely on temperature; humidity levels, air movement, system capacity and correct usage habits need to be evaluated together.

Ideal temperature should be between 23-26°C
Emphasizing that the first step to comfortable and efficient air-conditioning use is correct temperature setting, Karakaya stated:

"The 23-26°C range recommended by ASHRAE protects user comfort while preventing unnecessary energy consumption. Setting the air conditioner to lower temperatures significantly increases electricity consumption."

Humidity levels also determine comfort
Stating that indoor comfort cannot be achieved through temperature alone, Karakaya drew attention to the importance of maintaining relative humidity levels at 40-60 percent.

"High humidity makes the environment feel more oppressive and also reduces the efficiency of air-conditioning systems. Proper humidity levels create both a healthier indoor environment and support cooling performance."

Air flow should be directed properly
Stating that correct air circulation plays an important role in air-conditioning performance, Karakaya noted that controlled air movement can create a feeling of a cooler environment even at the same temperature level.

Do not frequently turn the air conditioner on and off
Saying that one of the most common mistakes users make is constantly turning the air conditioner on and off, Karakaya made the following assessment:

"From an energy efficiency perspective, running the air conditioner at a constant temperature and in a balanced manner is a more correct usage method. This reduces fluctuations in energy consumption and enables more effective humidity control."

Measures should be taken to reduce solar heat gain
Noting that air-conditioning systems consume more energy in living spaces that receive direct sunlight, Karakaya stated that curtains, blinds or shading applications reduce the heat entering the indoor space, contributing to more efficient operation of the air conditioner.

Regular maintenance saves energy
Emphasizing that periodic maintenance should not be neglected to obtain long-lasting and high-performance use from air-conditioning systems, Karakaya concluded his remarks as follows:

"Regular cleaning of filters, maintenance of heat exchanger surfaces and periodic inspection of air ducts increase system performance, reduce energy consumption and contribute to maintaining indoor air quality."
