Google Publishes "COVID-19 Community Mobility Report"

Google has published "Covid-19 Community Mobility Reports" showing how mobility patterns in countries have changed since the coronavirus outbreak began. According to the report covering 131 countries, Turkey saw a 45% decline in commuting to workplaces. In the report based on Google Maps data from 16 February to 29 March, changes in mobility at locations such as workplaces, retail stores, supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, transit stations and residential areas can be observed by country and time period.

Public transit usage fell 71%

According to the report, community mobility in Turkey decreased by 58% in areas such as national parks, beaches, marinas, parks and shopping malls. Community mobility in public transit areas such as metro, bus and train stations fell by 71%. In Germany, parks saw a 49% decline and public transit stations a 68% decline.

Mobility in supermarkets and pharmacies dropped 39%

The data shows that community mobility in supermarkets, specialty grocery stores, open-air markets and pharmacies decreased by 39%. In the United Kingdom this decline was 46%, in Spain 76%.

Workplace mobility fell 45% in Turkey, 63% in Italy

Another finding in the report shows that community mobility in workplaces in Turkey declined by 45%. Community mobility at residential locations increased by 17%. Italy's community mobility data indicates a 63% decline in workplaces and a 24% increase in residential areas.

Dutch residents commute more than French residents

Looking at the Netherlands, community mobility declined by 35% in workplaces and increased by 11% in residential areas. In France, there is a 56% decline in workplaces while community mobility in residential areas increased by 18%.

The US maintained higher public transit use than Turkey

In the United States, community mobility in shopping and entertainment areas fell by 47%. The report shows that community mobility in supermarkets and pharmacies in the US declined by 22%. In the US, community mobility in public transit centers fell by 51%, workplace mobility declined by 38%, while residential area mobility increased by 12%.

Ahead of the US, behind the EU

Gökhan Bülbül, CEO of EG Bilişim Teknolojileri, Google SMB Premier Partner, noted that the report was prepared based on anonymized data from people who allowed Google to access their location history, stating: "The Covid-19 Community Mobility Report, which shows changes in people's mobility at locations such as workplaces, homes, public transit areas, parks, supermarkets and pharmacies, covers 131 countries. When we examine the data up to 29 March, we see that the reduction in mobility in Turkey is at a higher rate compared to the US. When we compare our mobility with European countries, we can say that we are lagging behind the average."
