Wanhua Begins Scheduled Maintenance at BorsodChem's MDI and TDI Plants

Wanhua Chemical, one of the world's leading chemical companies, has launched comprehensive maintenance work at the MDI (Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate) and TDI (Toluene Diisocyanate) facilities within BorsodChem, one of its major production centers in Europe.
The maintenance process, which commenced on 17 July 2026, is planned to last approximately 35 days. As part of the work, the MDI facility with a capacity of 400,000 tonnes per year and the TDI facility with a capacity of 250,000 tonnes per year at BorsodChem's integrated production complex in Hungary have been progressively shut down. Additionally, maintenance work is being carried out on the aniline and nitrobenzene units that support the production processes.
Objective: Safe and Efficient Production Continuity
According to a statement by Wanhua, the maintenance work is being carried out as part of the annual maintenance plan to ensure that production equipment operates safely, reliably and efficiently. The company noted that the work is not expected to have a significant impact on production and operations across the group.
During the maintenance process, approximately 650,000 tonnes per year of MDI and TDI capacity will be temporarily offline in the European market. These products are among the key raw materials for numerous industrial applications, including polyurethane foams, coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers.
BorsodChem in Strategic Position in European Polyurethane Chain
BorsodChem, acquired by Wanhua Chemical in 2011, stands out as one of the company's most important production operations in Europe. The isocyanate-based products manufactured at the facilities in Hungary are used in solutions for various industries such as automotive, construction, furniture, refrigeration systems and coatings sectors.
MDI and TDI are among the key raw materials of critical importance in polyurethane production. These materials are regarded as strategic product groups in the global chemical sector due to their wide range of applications, from high-performance foams to industrial coatings.
Production Capacity Expected to Resume After Maintenance
Following completion of the planned maintenance work, the BorsodChem facilities are expected to return to normal production operations. These activities, which support the continuity of Wanhua's production infrastructure in Europe, are considered part of the company's operational reliability and production efficiency objectives.
