Tüpraş Launches New R&D Initiative in Hydrogen Transition

Türpraş, one of Turkey's leading energy companies, continues its work on clean hydrogen technologies in line with its low-carbon energy transition targets. Within the scope of the European Union Horizon Europe Programme, the HERMES (Hydrogen Efficient Purification Using Membranes in Industrial Gas Streams) Project, in which the company participates as a project partner, will test innovative membrane technologies for separating and purifying hydrogen from industrial gas streams in the field.

Through the project conducted within the scope of Türpraş's Strategic Transformation Plan, the aim is to develop technological solutions for increasing energy efficiency, reducing emissions and revaluating hydrogen in industrial processes.

Innovative Membrane Technologies to Be Used in Hydrogen Purification
The HERMES Project, among the studies conducted by Türpraş R&D Center, is supported by the European Union's Clean Hydrogen Partnership. Starting in 2025 and conducted with the participation of 7 stakeholders from four countries, the project scope includes the development of innovative membrane systems for more efficiently separating and purifying hydrogen from industrial gas streams.

Thanks to these technologies operating on the filtration principle, it is aimed to return hydrogen to re-production processes, optimize resource use and increase energy efficiency.

Pilot Applications to Be Conducted in Turkey and Italy
The membrane systems developed within the scope of the HERMES Project will be tested on two separate prototypes to be established in Turkey and Italy.

Türpraş will evaluate the field performance of the technology through pilot applications it will conduct at the İzmit Refinery. Within the scope of the studies, technical data will be obtained for separating, purifying and reusing hydrogen from mixed gases generated in refinery processes.

Murat Şimşek, Assistant General Manager of Technical Affairs at Türpraş, drew attention to the importance of R&D studies developed within the scope of energy transition in his evaluation of the HERMES Project.

Şimşek stated, "Through the R&D projects we conduct within the scope of our Strategic Transformation Plan, we aim to create value for the future of the energy sector while developing new technologies. With the HERMES Project, which we will conduct testing at our İzmit Refinery, we aim to strengthen our technical knowledge base on innovative hydrogen purification solutions and contribute to the development of advanced technologies. We believe that clean hydrogen will play an important role in the decarbonization of industry and in increasing energy efficiency."

Widespread Deployment of Technology Aimed For
In the pilot applications to be conducted within the scope of the HERMES Project; operational performance, hydrogen recovery efficiency, energy balance and field requirements will be evaluated.

If the results obtained are positive, plans are in place to deploy the developed membrane technologies widely in Türpraş operations and take new steps towards industrial-scale use of clean hydrogen solutions.
