Needle Coke/Synthetic Graphite Complex License and Engineering Agreement Announced by Chevron Lummus Global and TAQAT
The TAQAT Development Company recently awarded a contract to Chevron Lummus Global LLC (CLG) for the construction of a new 75,000 TPA needle coke/synthetic graphite complex in Rabigh, Saudi Arabia.
According to the agreement, Chevron Lummus Global will offer basic design, testing, licensing, additional engineering support, and operations support for the pilot plant. Rabigh Refining & Petrochemical Company (Petro Rabigh) will provide the feedstock.
The grassroots complex will use CLG’s two-step coking process to transform feedstock streams into high-quality needle coke and synthetic graphite, which would otherwise be used as fuel oil.
This process contributes to a more sustainable approach to resource utilization by turning feedstock streams that would otherwise be considered lower-value or waste materials into valuable products. As a result, it helps to lessen the impact on the environment.
The proprietary technology developed by CLG is the result of years of iterative improvement and accumulated data from more than 60 commercial installations and unit designs.
It has shown to be a more effective method of producing in-demand goods like needle coke and synthetic graphite from heavy feedstocks. This contract award demonstrates CLG’s know-how and pioneering position in the market for advanced carbon products.
