The top six countries with the highest number of visitors were Iran, Iraq, Germany, Pakistan, Azerbaijan and the United Arab Emirates.

As Turkey’s second most exporting industry, the chemical industry consists of over 10,000 companies, 424 of which has foreign partnerships, and provides employment for 500,000 people.

Managing to turn the global crisis into opportunity, the industry is expected to close the year with a growth rate of 8.5% and a growth rate of 15% in exports of the domestic market in 2018.

TURKCHEM International Chemical Industry Exhibitions hosts 54 events in 3 days

Expressing that TURKCHEM International Chemical Industry Exhibitions are a meeting point to discuss the latest technological developments on the industry, Yaman said that they have hosted a total of 54 activities including a “Panel Session” titled “Problems, Solutions and Opportunities in the Chemical Industry” that have been

attended by important representatives of the chemical industry such as TIM Sector Council member Murat Akyüz, Chairman of Turkey’s Chemical Manufacturers

Association Haluk Erceber, Metrohm Turkey CEO Andre Yanço, TOBB-Chemical Industry Council Advisor and Maltepe University’s Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Faculty Member Professor Serdar S. Çelebi, and the Association of Mineral Oil and Oil Products Industrialists Chairman Tayfun Koçak.

“Land investment – one of the biggest problems in the chemical industry“

Speaking at the conference, TIM Sector Council member Murat Akyüz mentioned briefly the absence of investment facilities for raw materials in the chemical industry in Turkey.

Emphasizing that although Turkey is a country that sets the prices on the global market, it does not hold the same position in production, Akyüz underlined that exports to the EU have increased due to the markets narrowing in the surrounding countries, however we should get closer to the countries in the Americas and the Far East.

Akyüz said, “Land investment is one of the biggest problems in the chemical industry. Unfortunately, you have to invest in land and concrete with the capital you have. When you look for financing for the aftermath, banks are valorizing 3 million USD for a land you have invested 10 million USD for.

First of all, these lands should be priced reasonably, and a sector-specific and company-specific incentive system should be established in Turkey.”

“We can close the gap between imports and exports with domestic and national projects”

Turkey’s Chemical Manufacturers Association Chairman Haluk Erceber noted that in spite of the financial problems during the year in the world and in our country, the chemical industry will close the year with a growth figure of 8.5% in the domestic market, and the foreign market export growth rate would be 15%.

Erceber added that the export figures are expected to reach 17 billion USD by the end of the year, and the share of the chemical industry in the foreign trade deficit to reach 24.2 billion USD.

Erceber emphasized that the gap between imports and exports could be closed with domestic and national projects and said that “70% of the raw materials used in the industry is imported. In this sense, we are dependent on foreign suppliers. Unfortunately, one of the biggest problems in the industry is the failure to scale up.

We should scale up both in terms of investment and turnover. There has been a serious slowdown in large-scale investments. Exports are on the rise but we have not yet increased the product diversity. We need to increase that.

Today, the chemical industry is supporting 30 different sectors and it is open to growth.” Chairman Erceber also emphasized that events such as TURKCHEM should be held more often to promote the industry in international markets.

TURKCHEM International Chemical Industry Exhibitions were organized in 3 main categories including “ChemShow Eurasia: 8th International Fine and Specialty Chemicals, Commodity Chemicals, Petrochemicals and Chemical Intermediates Exhibition”, “ChemLab Eurasia:

8th International Laboratory, Technology, Test-Measurement Equipments, Auxiliary Materials and Lab Consumables Exhibition” and “ChemTech Eurasia: 8th International Chemical Process and Automation Industry, Packaging, Recycling, Logistics, Occupational Safety and Environmental Technologies Exhibition.”
