NEW AGE SURFACE ACTIVE AGENT FROM EVONIK: GLYCOLIPID TECHNOLOGY

GLYCOLIPID

The first glycolipid product of the series, the RHEANCE® One, is a new generation surface active with strong cleaning properties and perfectly compatible with the skin. It is a sugar-based raw material that does not harm the environment with 100% natural renewable content. It is synthesized by microorganisms and produced by fermentation technology.

The RHEANCE® One is very soft and non-irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. It has a wide range of applications such as facial cleansing products in the form of micellar water, foam, gel and wet wipes, toothpaste, oral care water, baby cleansing products, hair and body shampoos. According to the application, the usage level is recommended as of 1-8%. It is very
easy to use with its low viscosity. The most suitable usage range is pH 5-8.

The in vitro – mildness assessment results, such as the red blood cell (RBC) test and the Zein test, confirm the non-irritating nature of RHEANCE® One.

Figure 1 shows the result of the RBC test in comparison to other PEG-free surfactants and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) as standard.

In the Zein test it has proven that the RHEANCE® One did not cause a protein denaturation in typical usage concentrations, in contrary to standard surfactants like Sodium Laureth Sulfate or Cocamidopropyl Betaine. RHEANCE ® One combines a high foaming power with a dense and creamy foam structure.

The foam kinetics was tested with the SITA equipment and showed a comparable performance of RHEANCE® One with Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Other tested PEG- and Sulfate-free surfactants were clearly outperformed, see Figure 2.

Additionally, RHEANCE® One provides a very creamy, dense and stable foam. Tests with the Krüss foam tester showed a higher initial amount of bubbles per mm2 as well as a lower initial average bubbles size in μm2 compared to Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Cocamidopropyl Betaine.

RHEANCE® One provides outstanding cleansing performance. Figure 3 shows the removal of long-lasting make-up compared to standard solubilizers and water.

RHEANCE® One facilitates the incorporation of essential oils into aqueous formulations. Figure 4 compares its solubilizing efficacy with the ones of standard PEG-solubilizers and a PEG-free benchmark.
