ABB has announced its agreement to acquire a majority stake in the software service provider Meshmind, aiming to enhance its capabilities in AI, Industrial IoT, and machine vision within its Machine Automation division (B&R).
This strategic move involves the integration of engineering expertise, AI, and software knowledge to establish a new global research and development (R&D) hub. The focus of this hub, operating under B&R, is to expedite the creation of innovative automation solutions.
Sami Atiya, President of ABB Robotics and Discrete Automation Business Area, emphasized the transformative potential of AI-powered robotics and automation in addressing industry challenges. The acquisition of Meshmind is intended to expedite the development of software and AI-driven solutions, making automation more adaptable and accessible across businesses of varying sizes.
The collaboration will involve Meshmind’s approximately 50 employees, fostering joint efforts with B&R teams on diverse R&D projects. These projects encompass deep learning vision systems, AI-enhanced engineering tools, and IoT application development.
The city of Sarajevo in Bosnia will become B&R’s new global hub for AI and software development as part of this integration. The financial specifics of the transaction, slated to conclude in Q1 2024, have not been disclosed.
Joerg Theis, President of the Machine Automation Division, highlighted the acquisition’s alignment with ABB’s broader ecosystem, emphasizing collaboration with universities, partners, and start-ups. This investment aims to reinforce ABB’s capacity and expertise to deliver solutions that simplify customers’ operations and contribute to shaping the future of various industries.
This move is concurrent with ABB’s recent acquisition of Sevensense, a prominent provider of AI-enabled 3D vision navigation technology for autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). These acquisitions underscore ABB and B&R’s strategic focus on innovative AI and software solutions, aiming to provide enhanced value to customers through cutting-edge and efficient technology.
