Is Industry Ready for an Earthquake?

The 4th Process Safety Symposium and Exhibition, coordinated by Kocaeli Chamber of Industry and organized by Chem Media-Artkim Group, will be held at Kocaeli Congress Center on September 12-13, 2023 with the theme “How Ready Is Industry for Earthquakes, Other Natural Disasters and Major Industrial Accident Risks?”.

Despite its strategic location at the center of three continents and its ideal characteristics in terms of industrial production and logistics networks, Türkiye also harbors significant risks due to its location in the earthquake zone.

In this sense, protecting industrial facilities and the entire production chain from the destructive effects of earthquakes gains great importance. While the pain of the 1999 Gölcük earthquake is still fresh despite the years that have passed, the severe earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş and affecting very large geography this year have increased concerns about the earthquake expected to be effective in and around Istanbul.

The 4th Process Safety Symposium and Exhibition

The August 17, 1999, Marmara Earthquake affected SMEs, the backbone of the country and the region, as much as large factories. It is known that many businesses were damaged and billions of dollars worth of damage were incurred in the earthquake that struck Türkiye’s industry at its heart.

Considering that the region is home to Türkiye’s largest industrial enterprises, it is clear that the earthquake, which is predicted to occur in approximately the same region, this time in the Marmara Sea, and which is called the “Expected Great Istanbul Earthquake”, will have a great impact on the Turkish industry and economy.

In addition to the earthquake, the risks posed by other natural disasters such as fires, floods, and storms that may threaten industry and process safety should not be ignored. It would be wise to evaluate in advance the extreme natural conditions that may be seen in Türkiye due to the effects of the global warming factor and the impacts they may create.

4th Process Safety Symposium and Exhibition on September 12-13

The 4th Process Safety Symposium and Exhibition, which will be held at the Kocaeli Congress Center on September 12-13, 2023 with the theme of “How Ready is Industry for Earthquakes, Other Natural Disasters and Major Industrial Accident Risks?”, will address how the industry and supply chain can be protected from the effects of earthquakes and other disasters with all factors.

It is expected that the experiences of industry professionals who experienced the 1999 Marmara Earthquake and faced the devastating effects of this catastrophe will provide guidance in terms of risks and solutions in the field of process safety. This important event, which will contribute to the development of industrial safety with presentations and conferences by experts, will be the meeting point for industry professionals.
