New Re-closable Packaging Solution from Henkel and LyondellBasell
Consumers are attempting to minimize food waste due to rising food prices and increased environmental awareness. Re-closable packaging is becoming more and more common because it is simple to use and extends the shelf life of food. Reclosable packaging minimizes moisture gain and loss, microbial development, and flavor deterioration of the food.
By creating new reopen/reclose properties, LyondellBasell (NYSE:LYB) and Henkel have taken re-closable packaging one step further and made it even more practical for consumers. The enhanced reopen/reclose properties are a result of the Henkel hotmelt adhesive’s foundation in a ground-breaking plastomer from LyondellBasell.
The final hotmelt adhesive produced by Henkel has a special composition that enables it to maintain the desired reopening and reclosure properties on amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (APET) and polyolefin trays even after numerous repetitions. This allows for a smooth initial opening. Henkel concluded that this solution was superior to earlier technologies in terms of benefits.
Dirk Kasper, Head of Product Development Packaging Adhesives Europe at Henkel, said, “It’s the first time we are using this type of solution for re-closable packaging,” “Thanks to its product design, our re-closable hotmelt provides processing advantages compared with current market alternatives. This is about its very good compatibility with coextruded materials such as polyethylene (PE) or polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PET-G) and stable film-blowing. Additionally, it shows long lasting re-closability properties.”
