It is well known that dehydration of the skin is one of the primary causes of skin ageing. What is less well known is that the loss of water from cells is one of the biggest factors in this ageing process.

Origin and Characteristics

Mechanism of Action

Intracellular Water and Osmolytes
Without intracellular water, cells lose their volume, vitality and ability to survive. Inside cells, the presence of osmolytes slows down intracellular water loss and promotes incoming water flow.

In keratinocytes the two main skin osmolytes are taurine and myo-inositol. They enter our cells thanks to specific membrane transporters: TAUT for taurine and SMIT for myo-inositol. With ageing and the decrease in osmolyte transporters, the structure of the epidermis is altered and becomes thinner. The skin progressively loses its density and plumpness appearance.
